When I was 3, I begged my mom to teach me how to read, and she did. As I approached school age, my parents weren't sure what grade to put me in, so they decided to homeschool me... and, eventually, my 6 younger siblings. Growing up, I read voraciously, devouring books of many different genres and lengths. Some of my favorites were historical fiction (especially the American Adventure series) and what I call "Biblical fiction" (books like "The Big Fisherman," '"The Robe," "The Bronze Bow," and the Arnold Ytreeide Advent storybooks). These books made important events come alive for me, with the historical figures becoming relatable and human.

Fast-forward almost 2 decades. My parents are still homeschooling my younger siblings, and I just graduated from Liberty University with a degree in Cinematic Arts (aka filmmaking). People often ask what movie inspired me to get into filmmaking. I realized eventually that it wasn't any movie. It was the books I had read growing up. When I read, I imagined the people and events of the story vividly, essentially creating a movie in my head. Filmmaking, I've discovered, allows me to share with others the stories I picture in my mind.

Now I'm working as a producer on a brand-new historical fiction feature film called "Elijah and George." This family-friendly movie is based on the book "George Washington's Army and Me," written and illustrated by Michael Dooling.  “Elijah and George” is an adventurous, at-times humorous story of family, freedom, and home set against the backdrop of the Revolutionary War. When young Elijah’s father does not return from the Battle of Monmouth, Elijah sets out alone to find him.

In an age of divisive politics, political correctness, and other factions, this story celebrates wholesome, unifying values: the beauty of a loving family, the resilience of the human spirit as father and son fight to get back to each other, and the goodness of freedom and home.

“Elijah and George” brings to light several important pieces of Revolutionary history, focusing on the women and children who followed the Continental Army and supported the soldiers. It includes accurate portrayals of characters such as Mary Hays (aka Molly Pitcher), Oneida Indian Polly Cooper, and teenage soldier Joseph Plumb Martin alongside the more well-known figures of General George Washington, General Charles Lee, and Lt. Col. Alexander Hamilton, etc. We have several historical experts on board as advisors to ensure accuracy in every aspect of the film, and the original story is based on letters and diaries from the period.

So, how can you see this film? Right now we are in the funding and development stage. We have a completed screenplay and many of our principal roles have been cast. We are pursuing funding through multiple channels, including crowdfunding! All donations through our “For the People, By the People” Network for Good crowdfunding page are tax deductible. Every dollar is helpful and greatly appreciated!

We also have some wonderful educational resources available as perks for our donors!

Celebrating Our Freedom

Two kinds of freedom.

Can we have one without the other?

Woman2Woman has a great article on our freedoms from being an American. She also includes a prayer that would be good to pray as a family.

National Day of Prayer put out these points to pray for our country.

Those are great ideas to pray to celebrate our freedom as Americans.

But what about the other freedom we enjoy? Our freedom in Christ

because of his death on the cross?

"For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death." Rom 8:2 ESV

Have you been set free from the law of sin and death? If so today is a good day to celebrate that along with celebrating the freedoms we enjoy as Americans.

If not you can follow this link and discover how you too can be free from the law of sin and death.

A Day I Will Never Forget

Friday, June 26, 2015 is a day I will never forget. I was out of town for a wedding I was attending in Denver, Colorado. I woke up that morning, showered, and headed off to help set everything up at the church for the following day's festivities. It wasn't till later in the day as I was walking to the rehearsal dinner, that I heard the news: the Supreme Court of the United States had delivered the verdict we feared against biblical marriage. Because of the significance of the Obergefell ruling on "gay marriage", that day will stand out in the minds of many people for years to come. But I will remember that day for a different reason. Friday, June 26 was the day before my wedding.

Checkoutthe Ultimate Homeschool Freedom Giveaway at the bottom of this post to win a $1,500 family trip, one of 12 Heritage Defense and home education legal defense memberships and more!

What Obergefell Meant to Me

That evening before my wedding day, I began to understand more clearly the significance of the covenant my bride and I would make the next day. I realized that with our marriage vows we would affirm to the world not only our commitment to each other, but also our commitment to the very institutions of Christian marriage and the family. Not only that, we had the privilege and duty to exemplify this commitment for the rest of our lives, no matter what the Supreme Court might say.

What Obergefell Means to Homeschoolers

My name is Daniel Craig, Im a homeschool graduate, and there are few things Im more committed to than home education and discipleship. Now that Im a husband, and hope soon to be a father, I long to pass on to any children the Lord gives me the incredible heritage of family discipleship that my parents gave me.

On June 27, when Megan and I made solemn vows to each other, we also made the promise of Psalm 78:4-7 to our parents: that we would not hide their instructions from our children, but rather teach them diligently so that our children might "set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments."

No doubt, this is a commitment we will have to fight harder to keep in a post-Obergefell America. Why? Because the June 26 blow to Christian marriage was really a blow to the heart of the Christian family. And as a result, every prerogative of the family institution is now at risk - from parental freedoms to medical freedoms to educational freedoms. And yes, that includes the freedom to homeschool as well.

What We Can Do

Friends, this is the time for us to prepare our hopeful, optimistic response to the growing opposition we face.

1. Get back to the basics.

I believe the next 20 years will reveal our true motivations for homeschooling. What started out as a movement rooted in conviction has morphed to a movement rooted - at least for many - in convenience. If our freedom to homeschool is significantly challenged in the next 20 years, as I believe it will be, then now is the time to anchor our commitment to home education in biblical convictions that will stand the test of persecution.

2. Defend family and religious liberties.

As we look at the 2016 presidential elections, we must send a strong message to our leaders that family and religious liberties are of utmost importance. We must also support courageous men and women who are already under attack for their faith, as well as the organization who defend them.

3. Dont engage the battle for family freedoms alone.

Thanks to organizations like HSLDA and Heritage Defense, you dont have to. When it comes time for your family freedoms to be defended, youll want an organization committed to doing just that on your side.
