Yearly Planning at the Sather House Tags: Purposeful Planning Planning seeking the Lord

This is the 23rd year we are setting aside a week to pray and seek the Lord about His plans for us and our family.

When I look back I can see some of what that consistency has accomplished. Many things would not have happened if we had not set aside this time each year to connect with the Lord and each other.

It brought tears to my eyes when my son told me he and his bride had a little planning day on their honeymoon! He had asked for a copy of the book - Purposeful Planning - but I didn't realize that was his purpose for wanting it.

Starting Saturday, January 19th we will spend the better part of each day for the next week talking and praying with each other and our two daughters who are still at home. Yes, they are adults, but they really want to have their time to talk and pray with us. Isn't that wonderful!

As usual, we would like to ask you to pray for us during this time. We NEED your prayers. Our enemy doesn't want us to spend this time seeking God's plans for our lives. He wants us to fail, and our family to fail.

"Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour." I Peter 5:8

Our Scripture for this book is "Where there is no vision the people perish." Proverbs 29:18

This time is when we check our course. Are still walking the way the Lord wants us to? Are we going the way we planned, or have we somehow gotten off on the wrong trail?

I had a lesson on this yesterday when going to meet my friend. Thinking away I suddenly realized I was on the wrong street. I ended up being a half hour late because I wasn't paying attention. I had signs, like not remembering some things along the way I was on. But it took me a while to realize that I was lost.

Please leave me a comment telling me you will be praying for us. It will really encourage us. I'll try to drop some notes next week as well updating you on our progress.

How To Live More Intentionally Tags: Family goals Purposeful Planning living intentionally

Work for our dreams intentionally

Living more intentionally is hard work

So if you aren't ready to make some sacrifices of time, energy, and possibly money, you should not consider it.

There is no magic pill that will just make you more intentional in all you do.

Praying during our planning times helps us make decisions about ways we want to be more intentional. Asking the Lord about what He wants us to do with different areas of our lives keeps us going in the right direction.

What then?

Having ideas and direction are no good unless you implement them.

"The LORD shall preserve your going out and your coming in From this time forth, and even forevermore."[Psa 121:8 NKJV]

  • You can start small to avoid being overwhelmed.
  • Make small intentional choices every day.
    • Base them on the choices you made when you were planning.
  • Think before you act.
    • If you are saving for a family vacation you might want to have hamburgers instead of steak.
  • Pray for your choices.
    • Asking the Lord to guide you is a great way to stay on track.
    • I actually pray before going into any store.
  • Keep a journal.
  • Stop and evaluate often.
    • It will encourage everyone if you evaluate together.
      • For example - "We have half the money saved that we need to go....!" Or saying something similar to your family will get everyone onboard again with saving.
  • Remind yourself why you are doing this.
  • Surround yourself with like-minded people.
    • Having a family goal and working intentionally together on it can really form a special bond.
  • Do it anyway.
  • Ge gracious and forgiving with yourself.
    • You WILL fall - more than once if you are human.
    • Pick yourself up and start again.
  • Notice even small changes.
    • Pennies make nickles, nickles make dimes, dimes make dollars.
  • Review your intentions regularly.
  • Remember this is a journey.
    • There are things on our planning list that will probably never happen, but there are also things on our list that wouldn't have happened if they weren't there. Many things in our lives started out as an idea during a planning weekend. Some took years of praying and planning, but they happened.

Next week I'll have a workbook to go along with planning to live more intentionally. For now, I've included a form for you to keep track of what intentional things you do this week.  Living With Purpose
